Curriculum

Union Hospital's Family Medicine Residency is an innovative, hands-on, comprehensive program. Residency faculty created a program that offers the tools and experiences necessary for success. The curriculum is developed to follow the trends of family medicine. However, the faculty is flexible in allowing the residents to tailor their own training experiences.  Enhanced opportunities in a given area may be offered at the request of the resident. **During dedicated night blocks, residents also participate in Orthopedics and Cardiology rotations while maintaining opportunities for continuity clinic, vacation, and CME.

The Residency operates on a monthly rotation schedule, with the first day of the rotation beginning on the first of the month.

Required Procedures

These are to be completed with Flexible Scheduling:

• Biopsy, skin (such as excisional, punch, or shave)

• Bracing/splinting of upper extremity or ankle

• Destruction of skin lesions, acrochordon removal

• EKG interpretation

• I&D superficial abscess

• Interpretation of basic x-rays including chest, KUB, spine, and extremities

• Joint injection/aspiration of large joints such as knee or shoulder

• Long-acting Reversible Contraception: IUD insertion and removal or implant insertion and removal †

• Pap smear sampling and interpretation of results

• Simple laceration repair with sutures; suture and staple removal

• Toenail procedures including excision of ingrown nails and the management of onychomycosis

• Trigger point or other therapeutic injections

• Initial certification in ACLS, ALSO, and NRP/NALS*
