Training Sites

The Family Medicine Residency program, sponsored by Union Hospital, provides hands-on training in medically underserved areas. Union Hospital's Family Practice Center is adjacent to the hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana and serves as headquarters for the 21 residents (seven in each class). During their three years in the program, they gain critical on-the-job experience from assisting in surgery and deliveries at the hospital to diagnosing illnesses and prescribing patient care plans in the family medicine center and rural health clinics.

The Family Medicine Center is affiliated with a federally qualified health center (FQHC). Valley Professionals Community Health Center-Terre Haute (VPCHC-TH) is the primary site where residents conduct their continuity clinic. It is a 24,000 square foot facility which includes 28 examination rooms, two minor procedure rooms, and a state-of-the-art conference room.

VPCHC-TH averages 1800 visits each month with approximately 1000 families enrolled. These patients represent all walks of life, from professionals to indigent care patients. Residents are assigned 50-75 families during the first year, 125 during the second year, with an increase to 200 families during the third year. Caring for all of their medical needs, including obstetrics, the intern sees patients one-two half day per week, but provisions are made to see assigned patients when the need arises. Second year residents are in the office two-three half days weekly, and third year residents see patients in the office four half days per week.
